iJoe App Showdown - Sports

So today saw the launch of the new BBC Sport app. They are a little late to the party but let's see what they've got.

I shall be reviewing the following three apps.

BBC Sport
Eurosport
Sky Sports News

I shall be reviewing them as using them as a Sports app, so I'm looking to get all my fix in one hit, looking for scores, news, live data, facts, figures, tables and the usual UI, usability and quality.

I shall also be analyzing whether these apps have a purpose when put up against Social Media and the full blown World Wide Web.

None of these apps are universal with iPad, however both Eurosport and Sky Sports have individual iPad versions.

I also note there are lots of other alternatives to capture the Sports stories and scores however these are the 3 most complete and from the biggest names in Sport in the UK.

BBC SPORT

The beeb have been developing this app for some time and it is essentially an enhanced app version of the mobile BBC Sport site  that has been rolling out for the ;last 6 months. Personally i'm not a fan of Mobile Web sites, the iPhone has pinch to zoom to enable me to see the whole web, but that aside that is essentially exactly what all these apps are.

Visually its very sharp, very yellow and Bright. Its optimized for the iPhone 5 and really cranks up the Retina display with very sharp text and very clear images.

When you open the app you get a small flash screen and then it opens up with the main headlines of the day at the top, as you scroll down the home page you have a small section for Scores and results which has clickable links but no scores or results displayed on the home page, as you carry on down there is more news with a tab to select by sport which has stories filtered by sports, but these are not users choice so the stories are whatever is published there. As i was writing this review, there was an article about New Years Honors which was published on the 29th December. Finally at the bottom of the home page there is links to a Gossip section and links to listen to 5 Live Radio. There is a small Quick link button on the right hand side which i shall detail shortly. It supports Pull down to refresh and works in landscape mode.

When you select a story there a small loading icon then your story loads, most stories have a related picture, however video is not supported, which is a huge let down for me. Also when you open up the story a menu appears at top of story related to that sport with results, fixtures and further reading.

The Quick link button opens up a menu which has Sport home at the top and you can configure which sports go below that, and put them in order of which is your favorite however the 7 sports which are in the menu as default (Football, Cricket, F1, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Tennis and Golf) are the only ones with fancy app menus, all the other sports, which there are a vast amount, load in a mobile web viewer and its my old friend again the mobile BBC site.

When using the live services, its a very nice experience. You have to manually refresh the screen but its exactly what you would expect from live commentary of something, it has clickable links for stories and rumors  and not just for the BBC website but external sites too, this is a major positive.

Overall its a very crisp app which all the essentials covered, its easy to use and gives the people who like 7 specific sports a great experience. If you happen to like something else, unfortunately you are not treated in the same way, also the limitations such as inablity to access score from home page, and lack of support for video leaves this app with a very basic aftertaste.

When compared to the full blown BBC Sport web page its 3rd rate. I understand your not going to be able to create the same user experience on a 4 inch display but i don't understand the lack of video support (Even the mobile browser supports it) and why you would create fancy in app pages for only 7 sports and not the rest.

Sky Sports News

Now earlier in the article i stated they had a iPad version of this app, id like to retract that as the iPad version is a BMW version and the iPhone app is simply a bicycle with a broken chain.

This App has been out in two different forms for around 2 years however this current version was released last April and hasn't been updated since October. Even when it was updated in October it wasn't optimized for the larger screen of the iPhone 5 (a large bug bear of mine.)

When you open the app you are left unstimulated visually. It displays a screen with 4 option tabs, 4 and a half news headlines and a button in the top left. OH and a flashing advert. You can scroll down to view the other 5 and a half headlines whilst carefully avoiding the advert.

The tabs across bottom Home, Live TV, Radio and Settings. A different advert shows on every screen except settings, which aren't anything worthy of its own tab, its just a selection choice of when you would like the app to refresh its data, (choice of 30 seconds - 5 minutes) if i'm honest i don't want any of these, i want to refresh it when i choose. If i leave the app open but not active for 10 minutes, it will refresh the data 20 times on the lowest setting, i did this and nothing changed at all.

As you open a news story its loses the advert and just gives you a text view and occasionally some pictures, it does support video which is a major +1 over the BBC. Also the stories load directly, this is because they are not full of data, its like reading a SMS.

The radio tab gives you the oportunity to listen to Sky Sports News Radio. It doesn't blow your mind, its escentially Sky Sports News Headlines with no Video footage, you can listen whilst reading the stories and also you can leave the app and continue listening if you so wish.

The Live TV tab is two adverts, one in same place at the bottom of the screen and the other telling you that you need to download the Sky Go App if you actually want Live TV.

The button in the left corner of the screen is the "quick links" part of this app. The choice is a little less than BBC you have 9 choices all with their own menu. Top Stories (Which is default) Football, Cricket, Rugby Union & League, Golf, Tennis, F1 and Boxing. Sound familiar? When you click on each one it opens up with tabs across the top with options to find out live scores, results, fixtures, tables etc etc.

For Live scores and comentary you have to download another app or two. Sky only support Football and Cricket and provide a "Score Centre" app for those sports.

Overall Sky Sports News App is unloved and unloving. Some very minor developers have produced much better apps than this. The Sky Sports app for iPad is a completely different fish. Sky Should pull this app or at least develop it.

When compared again to the Full Blown Skysports web page, this shouldn't even bear the same name. As we all know from Football and Formula one, when Sky throw there money and weight behind something they can truly bring it alive, they need to spend a little on the app.

Eurosport

This App has been around for around 3 years. Over that time it has been enhanced and developed consistantly. Most importantly it is optimized for the iPhone 5. A huge plus for the app is the iPad app, that despite not being a universal app by download, is basically the same app but bigger and with a different UI,

When you open this app you get no Splash screen so you get straight into the news, really important if you want to check a score or find some breaking news. The app is visually very nice, not too bright like the BBC but with the crispness and soft colours so not to distract you from the stories.

On the screen you have 4 tabs across the top. Headlines, In Brief, Videos and Live. You have two buttons in top left and right.

Firstly the top left button opens a menu that displays as many sports as the BBC if not more, It also contains The settings which are really settings, in there you can configure 4 major things. Home country - So your news is in the correct language. Your default home page, so if you want it to load up every time on the Nordic Combined Skiing news every time, this app will. and font size - This dictates the article reading font, the larger it is the longer it takes to load, but only seconds. Also you can configure it to send you push notifications of breaking news.

Push notifications you say? Yes, also in the left hand menu you can set it up to send you notifications of scores, results, starting matches of particular Teams or Players. Now it only supports Football, Rugby Union and Tennis but this is a new feature that will be enhanced as time goes on. Plus you can have more than one, so you can configure it for all your matches that your betting on every week or just your favourite tennis player.

Each sport has its own menu and the four menus stay, so you can become immersed into your favourite sport.

The right menu button is the Score Centre. If you open it up on The All Sports Menu it will load All Sports, and you can then go in and out to find the right one. If you open it on your favourite sport page, it will load only those results. The amount of detail that is contained is simply unmatchable. For example you can not only find out how many Aston Villa lost by this week, but you can also find out that T.Machida from Japan won the Mens Figure Skating Cup of China.

In the score centre you can scroll forward and back to see previous results and see future fixtures. In sports where there is league tables you can hit a button top right which shows you the league table, and other tables such as leading scorers, form guide, whos good at home, whos good away.

Back to the Headlines tab, in any sport screen will keep scrolling until you have around 30-40 stories on the page. When you click on a story theres a short load time and it loads with a picture or two and text, a feature i like is the comments,  you can add your own comment to each story or read what everyone elses views are.

On the In Brief tab is simply a breaking news tab, but not just the big stories. Like a twitter version of the news, click on any story and it will load up just like he article in headlines.

The videos tab is best used when in the specific sport your reading about. It has a featured tab, a most viewed tab and a TV guide. The latter is just what you can watch on Eurosport so not really worth its while but the other two are spot on. Click on the video and it loads straight away and you can click to view full screen in landscape.

Finally we have the LIVE tab. It does exactly what it says on the tin, if something is happening in the world of sport right now you can find it here, and if you select the particular event you can have live text comentary. Not on everything but on the things that matter, Also this auto refreshes itself so you never miss a beat. You can also check on anything that has happened recently in the results and anything thats coming up on the Coming up tab.

In Summary the Eurosport App is chocked full of detail, news, fixtures, tables and everything else. If you want an app to find out news and scores of any sport you should look no further.

When comparing the app to the Eurosport web site, its basically the same thing, visually and how to use, as is the iPad app, it makes the experience of crossing over very comfortable.

iJoe View.

These apps are the best definition of the Good, the bad and the Ugly you could ever think of.

The BBC app is ugly in the fact it fails to implement its shiny exterior to the complete interior and runs a mobile web experience.
The Sky Sports App is just simply bad, unloved and dreadful.
The Eurosport App is Good, Great and a full web experience on your mobile phone.

I generally utililize twitter for my sports news, if it appears on any of these apps ir usually appeared first on twitter. However i use Eurosport to read more in depth of a story and the fact it supports push notifications also helps me keep up to date with how my team are doing.

Do Not Disturb. Back to work.

Just a quick blog post to confirm what Apple told us early last week. I switched Do Not Disturb back on last night and it successfully switched itself off this morning on both devices.

Ironically I was actually woken up by a text after it switched off.

I believe that Apple will build a fix into an upcoming version of iOS to fix the glitch so it doesn't become an issue next year.

So you can put your schedules back on now, Do Not Disturb is actually a really strong feature that iJoe recommend you utilise. If you need help you can read how to configure it Here.

Do Not Disturb Glitch. Apple Speaks. Final Update.

So it's in typical Apple style but they have issued a piece of supporting information in reference to the DND Glitch. Which is pretty similar to the advice that was issued earlier by this blog.

Source link.

As it states :-

iOS 6: Do Not Disturb mode stays on after scheduled time
Products Affected
iPad, iPhone, iPod touch

Symptoms
After January 1st, 2013, Do Not Disturb mode stays on past its scheduled end time.

Resolution
Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off.

To turn off the scheduling feature, tap Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb and switch Scheduled to Off.

This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

Because of this being fixed I believe Apple will now build in a fix into iOS 6.03 which is currently on Beta 4.

Setting up your iDevice Part 2

So in this part we will be going through the settings in the General, About & Siri Submenus.

ABOUT. (To Access - Settings, General, About)

Is not only a place to find specific information out about your iDevice but it's also features some small tweaks to really personalise your phone.

Name - Yes you can name your device, anything you want. This will show up every time you plug into iTunes, will show in your wifi devices etc etc. Go mad, let your imagination run free but please don't just call it (Your Name) (Your Device) because I can guarantee that there will be another Joe Bloggs who has an iPhone. NB. Yes my iPhone 5 is called SJ 5 after Steve Jobs.

The next few details are literally about your device, so Network, how many songs you have, and some important details such as imei and serial number. iJoe recommends you write your serial number down somewhere safe, you will need it if anything bad happens.

Finally at the bottom there are three submenus called Advertising. diagnostics and usage and legal.

Firstly the legal menu has all the legal notices that cover Apples back against your phone, if you want to read them all carry on.

The Diagnostics and usage menu is a place you can set if you wish to send usage data to Apple or not. The data it sends is far reaching and will mostly contain your location, so if your protective of this sort of thing I suggest you turn it to "Don't send".

Finally the advertising menu has a small choice for you to make. From all the D&U that Apple gets from the above it will then utilise its iAds in some of its apps to be specifically tailored to you and your location. If you won't want this to happen and for you to get just generic iAds turn it off.

GENERAL. (To access - Settings, General)

Some very important menus In here and things that can really help utilise your phone to its full capacity.

Software update - Every now and again Apple updates the software for your iDevice, to enhance some features or fix some bugs, you can update over wifi this way, if you just pop into this menu it will check if there is an update. iJoe recommends you update your device to the most available software.

Usage - Shows how much space is taken up on your device and a break down of what is using it. Does same for iCloud and cellular(mobile) usage. Also can choose to have a percentage displayed by your battery.

Siri - Any device after the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 is Siri compatible. If you don't know what Siri is its a mobile assistant that when you hold down the home button you can ask it to carry out certain tasks. (All likely tasks are shown in one of the images at the bottom.) Now personally I don't use Siri. It's not a complete enough product for me to get a benefit out of. Plus by turning Siri off you can save a hell of a lot of battery so it's up to u.

Cellular - (If your device is wifi only you won't have this.) This is the place to make sure you don't go rocketing over your mobile data allowance. You can set it up to disable or enable 3G, data roaming and what your device uses 3G for such as FaceTime, iTunes downloads etc etc. it's up to you with your download limits and how much of your day you sit in a wifi Zone.

VPN - This is a setting only someone who knows what a VPN is will utilise. If you have a VPN and want your iDevice to be a part of it you can configure it here.

iTunes wifi sync - Since iOS 5 you have been able to use an iDevice without directly needing a computer with iTunes, also you have been able to update and sync your phone via your computers wifi network, you device will do this automatically if your device and computer is on the same wifi, the device is locked and charging and you have selected the option in iTunes for you to wifi sync. Personally I feel this feature is poor, and isn't as reliable as it should be, it not only slows your wifi down it slows your computer and iTunes down because it needs so much CPU to work, iJoe recommends that if you sync a lot of data on or off your iDevice you plug your lightening or 30 Pin connector in. NB. Yes my computer is called Tim Cook.

Spotlight search - if you slide your menus to the right all the way your screen will shade out and a search bar will appear. If you search anything in there such as Cat, it will find everything in your phone that features cat, such as a SMS you might of sent and email, a contact called cat, an appointment about a cat. Literally anything related. If you don't want your phone to search all of this data, maybe take out messages or contacts you can change that in this menu.

Auto lock - A simple menu for you to decide how long your device will need to be inactive before it auto locks itself. The lower it is the better for your battery life and your security.

Pass code lock. - This is basically a pin for your phone. In this menu you can set it up, change how to use it, when its required and which applications can be used without it. One feature I would always make sure is put to NO unless you are a secret agent would be the Erase all data after 10 attempts. This will wipe your phone after 10 incorrect guesses. iJoe would recommend a pass code for your security.

Restrictions. - A very clever way to protect your device and bank account if someone else is using your device. If you enable restrictions you can stop certain tasks from happening such as in app purchases, deletion of apps. This feature really is useful if your children use your device.

Date and Time - Self explanatory. Should be set to set automatically, with your correct time zone below and your choice of 12 or 24 hour clock.

Keyboard - A great place to really personalise your phone, firstly the options.
Auto capitalisation - if on after a full stop the device will capitalise the first letter of next word. Like this.
Auto correction - If you make a common spelling mistake your device will correct it for you.
Check spelling'- Will check your spelling as you type and underline in red if its incorrect.
Enable caps lock - You can put device in caps lock by double tapping on the shift button.
"." Shortcut - If enabled will place a full stop every time you press space twice.

Keyboards - if you are able to communicate in another language then you can add additional keyboards via this menu and they will show up on every keyboard with a little globe symbol.

Shortcuts - you can add your own personal auto corrections, so if you find yourself always typing a word incorrectly you can put the incorrect way in as your short cut and the correct way as your phrase. Then every time you type it wrong the device will auto correct it. A great way I use these for is for form filling or information keeping, so I put my email addresses as the phrase and a quick shortcut to them so if I type gmail my email address pops up. iJoe really recommends this as a way to speed up how u use your device.

International - You can customise your device to what ever language you require.

Accessibility - Apple is The best at making devices everyone can use and in the accessibility options you can really tailor your device to be easier to use if you are hard of hearing, disabled, visually impaired, react better to light, see colours differently. There is a wealth of options for you to use no matter what, there are no barriers here.
Two features I will highlight is LED Flash for alerts is a setting a lot of people use, when you have a notification your flash on the back of the phone flashes, much like a blackberry. Also assistive touch, if really useful if you have an issue with your hands or your devices home button, when enabled it puts a software home button on the screen that allows you to use your phone as normal. It also shades out when not in use.

And finally, the place to go if something not right. RESET. In this menu you can reset your phone in many ways, all will involve some sort of data loss and change to your phone. I would only utilise these options as a last resort and after you have backed up your data to an external source.

So that's part two done. A lot of detail about pure settings of your phone to make it work efficiently and to its full capabilities.

If you have any questions or queries please email me or visit Facebook page and twitter account. Links at bottom of page.

Next time we will be going through Brightness Settings, wallpapers and iCloud.

Do Not Disturb Glitch Update...Fix?

So the Glitch seems to be much larger than before, with more devices affected on second day.

Having read a hell of a lot of forums it seems that there maybe many quick fixes but nothing that will directly fix it.

I've spoken to one Apple Genius at my local store and he didn't even know it was an issue, another one i spoke to was aware of issue but hadn't heard of a fix, he believed they (Apple) could fix it in a update.

One poster on the official Apple forum posted that it will be fixed itself by January 6th. He has worked it out for the next 10 years, however i feel Apple will definitely fix it prior to then.

Here's What he said :-

I made some tests and this issue will fix itself on Sunday January 6, 2013. It will happen the first few days of January 2014 (until Sunday January 5, 2014) if the bug is not fixed. Most first few days of most years seem to have this bug. The bugs starts on January 1st (based on the From time under Scheduled) and is usually fixed on the first Sunday of the year (except if the first day of the year is a Sunday, then it is fixed on the second Sunday). Years preceding years where the first day is a Sunday are not affected by the bug.
Let's check the next few years, this is the pattern :
2013 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 6
2014 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 5
2015 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 4
2016 : Issue not happening even though first day is a Friday
2017 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 8 (Jan 1st is also a Sunday)
2018 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 7
2019 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 6
2020 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 5
2021 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 3
2022 : Issue not happening even though first day is a Saturday
2023 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 8 (Jan 1st is also a Sunday)
2024 : Issue fixed on Sunday Jan 7
Etc...
The same pattern happens if you go back in time as well.
Note : If DND is scheduled before midnight, then the issue and the fix (see above) are delayed one day since it's based on the From time under Scheduled.

So clearly there will be a long term fix but you will have to wait till Sunday at the earliest. Maybe Do Not Disturb wanted the end of the week off for Christmas

iJoe advice is to simply disable Scheduled option until after Sunday. To do this Settings, Notifications, Do Not Disturb, Scheduled off.

Simply use option in to switch on and off overnight or during meetings etc.

All this comes at the same time Apple have released a new Advert promoting the benefits of DND.

Really awful PR and timing, and as one person discovered the glitch is actually shown in video.

As the scheduled time for starting is 11pm and the time in the status bar shows 10:41 and the moon icon.

All in all a stupid start to 2013 for Apple, after Antennagate, Map issues they really need to have a mistake free year.

iOS Do Not Disturb Glitch

As the clock struck midnight around the world the gremlins were working their way around iOS to start a new glitch for the new year. I'm going to christen this glitch the "Scott Forstall Glitch"

After previous years of alarms not working. This time you might miss an important text, email or phone call.

If you have the Do Not Disturb feature set up to be scheduled over midnight on you iDevice it may still be on. (This is where you glance up to the status bar and check if your clock has the moon icon there.)

It's not effecting everyone. My iPhone 5 is fine but I've just had to correct my iPad.

The quick fix is to go into settings, notifications, do not disturb and turn the schedule off, the restart it. This fixes it going forward today. We will have to wait till tomorrow if it fixes it completely.

Update
